RC boats for ponds and pools
Remote control boats differ in size, handling and features. This guide compares racing boats, a tug boat and swimming animal models for pools, ponds and calm water. Every model below is for water only. None runs on dry land.
What to look for
Choose the water space first. A racing boat needs room to turn and return to the bank. A bath or small paddling pool gives much less space. Avoid treating a small pool as a racing course.
Self-righting is useful if a boat turns over. It is a listed feature on the H100, H101, H109 and Storm 2008. Do not assume every boat has it.
Water cooling, lights and water spray are separate features. Twin motors alone do not tell you how fast a boat will be. Check the individual specification.
Check the age rating, controller batteries and charging instructions. A swimming animal shape does not establish suitability for a toddler. Supervise use near water and keep fingers clear of propellers.
The boats
The shark speed boat has a removable shark shell, twin motors and 2.4GHz control. Its rechargeable battery and USB cable are included. The controller requires two AAA batteries, supplied separately.
The Skytech H100 is self-righting, uses 2.4GHz control and is rated 14+. The Skytech H101 adds a listed water-cooled motor. Both are racing models, so allow space rather than choosing them for a bath.
The H109 racing boat combines self-righting and water cooling. Its listed speed is about 35 km/h. The Storm 2008 has self-righting, water cooling and LED lights. Its listed speed is about 25 km/h. These figures are specifications, not guaranteed results in every pool or pond.
The Syma Double Horse 7008 is about 72 cm long, with twin motors and water cooling. It is rated 14+ and needs a larger water space.
For a different style of play, the Heng Long tug boat is 1:72 scale with twin motors. The fire rescue boat has a working water spray, triple motors and a 14+ rating.
The swimming crocodile is rechargeable. The swimming whale has 2.4GHz control and water spray. Both listings specify pools, ponds and baths. Check their age suitability before buying.
How to decide
For pond racing, compare the self-righting models. For water-spray play, look at the whale or fire rescue boat. For a bath or small pool, start with the swimming models and check age, size and room to move.
