RC toy sizes and storage - understanding scale and dimensions

Scale numbers, vehicle dimensions and track piece counts describe different things. This guide explains how to judge an RC toy's size before buying, particularly when turning space or storage is limited.

What to look for

Scale is a proportion. A 1:10 model represents its subject at one tenth of full size, while 1:16 represents one sixteenth. For the same subject, the smaller denominator gives the larger model.

Different subjects have different real dimensions. A 1:16 tank, car and lorry will not necessarily be the same length. Use the stated measurements when checking a shelf, cupboard or play area.

Include moving parts and accessories. A crane arm, loader arm or trailer can extend beyond the main body. A controller, charger and spare tyres also need storage.

For track sets, use the assembled layout rather than the box size. Piece count can include supports and scenery as well as track. It does not directly establish course length.

Leave room to operate the toy. A vehicle that fits on the floor may still lack space to turn. A helicopter needs clearance around its rotors, and a boat needs water space beyond its hull length.

Check missing measurements before ordering if fit is important. Do not estimate an exact size from a photograph or apply one model's dimensions to another.

Products to compare

The larger construction digger is about 50 cm long. That figure is more useful for storage planning than the word large. Check how its shovel and arm sit when put away.

The cement mixer truck is about 35 x 10 x 16 cm. Its mixer drum is hand-turned, and its batteries and controller also need storing.

The crane truck is about 36 x 10 x 16.5 cm. Its manual extending arm and hook make checking the stored position worthwhile.

The amphibious truck is about 30 x 21 x 16 cm and is described as 1:14 scale. The stated width helps compare it with narrower vehicles.

The steam-effect monster truck is about 28 x 14 x 12 cm. Compare those dimensions with the amphibious model rather than judging only by wheel count.

The Syma Double Horse racing boat is about 72 cm long. Allow suitable storage and a water area that gives it room to turn.

The glow stunt loop track has 25 pieces. Check the layout footprint separately; 25 pieces is not a measurement.

How to decide

Use dimensions for fit, scale for model comparison and assembled layouts for tracks. Allow extra space for moving parts, controls and play. If the available shelf or floor area is tight, confirm the missing measurements before choosing.
